$50,000 Goal

The Coastside Land Trust is dedicated to the preservation, protection and enhancement of the open space environment, including the natural, scenic, recreational, cultural, historical, and agricultural resources of Half Moon Bay and the San Mateo County coast for present and future generations.

We serve the community and the local environment through...

Stewardship: Active land acquisition, management, monitoring, and conservation efforts.

Community Education:

  1. Junior Land Stewards Program: Connects local students with nearby open spaces, fostering environmental literacy and stewardship through hands-on fieldwork and science lessons. Students participate in hands-on fieldwork, including prairie restoration and indigenous pollinator garden plantings, guided by trained high school science students. They also engage in weekly science lessons and nature journaling to reflect on their experiences.
  2. Community Webinar Series: Connects the public with local open spaces through talks with esteemed environmentalists and professors.
  3. Guided Educational Walks: Specialized tours at properties like Wavecrest and the Purissima Old Town Site, exploring ecology, geology, history, and more.
  4. Nature Journaling Workshops: For seniors and local educators to deepen connections to the natural world.
  5. Community Events: Fun and educational activities like the "Running of the Goats" and local workdays.

Wavecrest Coastal Trail Project: Improving safety, green spaces, and accessibility at Wavecrest for everyone to enjoy.

Needs

The Coastside Land Trust is seeking funding to support its Junior Land Stewards Program. Thanks to the Kirby Foundation, every donation will be matched up to $20,000 - doubling your impact!

Your support will sustain and expand our Junior Land Stewards Program: The Junior Land Stewards Program brings environmental science to life for students right here on the San Mateo Coastside. Through hands-on fieldwork, nature journaling, and inquiry-based science lessons, students develop a deeper connection to the open spaces, wildlife, and ecosystems in their own backyard.

From dissecting wildflowers and exploring pollinator gardens to identifying birds and conducting community science investigations, Junior Land Stewards build real scientific skills alongside a lasting sense of place and stewardship. Every lesson takes place within the Cabrillo Unified School District, ensuring that all students - regardless of background - have access to meaningful outdoor education and the natural wonders of the Coastside.

Our programming extends beyond the classroom, too. We invest in teacher development and workshops, equipping Coastside educators with the tools, training, and confidence to bring nature-based learning into their curriculum year-round. And through our high school field guide training, older students step into leadership roles-developing naturalist skills, learning to interpret the landscape, and sharing their knowledge with younger students and the broader community.

Your gift helps us reach more classrooms, train more young scientists, and grow the next generation of land stewards.
