About Coastside Community Breakfast 

Coastside Community Breakfast provides hot, nutritious breakfast twice a week to those in our community who need it. All are welcome, no questions asked. Our guests include neighbors struggling to make ends meet, seniors on fixed incomes, farmworkers, families with children, and people/families who are without homes. Food insecurity isn’t just “somewhere else.” In San Mateo County, more than 80,000 neighbors struggle to access enough nutritious food – including thousands of children.

Every Wednesday and Thursday, from 7 - 9am, volunteers at the Coastside Community Breakfast prepare and serve up to 150 meals or more each day. The need has grown significantly – the number of meals we serve has doubled since last year. Even in an affluent county like San Mateo, nearly 1 in 3 households is considered “at risk” of food insecurity due to the high cost of living. That’s why community programs like Coastside Community Breakfast matter.

We are Neighbors Feeding Neighbors. Our volunteers work hard to shop, prepare, cook, serve and clean up for our guests.  The Coastside Community Breakfast serves hot, nutritious food such as eggs, sausage, veggies, oatmeal, pancakes, coffee and orange juice. We provide takeout containers so our guests can provide a meal for a family member, or for a meal later. 

Breakfast is more than a meal. Many of our guests are regulars and look forward to socializing with each other and our volunteers. We have groups of guests who come from the Coastside Senior Center to enjoy a nutritious breakfast, enjoy fellowship with friends, and make new friends.

How We Operate

Powered by Volunteers – Our volunteers make the program work. Volunteers include members of Coastside Lutheran Church, other faith communities, the Rotary Club, Lions Club and the coastside community at large.  Everyone who works at the Coastside Community Breakfast is a volunteer. There are no salaries or administrative overhead, allowing donations to go a long way. Last year, our costs were just under $3 per meal. With the rising cost of eggs and food in general, every donation will be even more important than ever, and we work hard to keep our costs down. Our volunteers show up early, cook with love, and serve with dignity – because food insecurity affects real people who live in our own community. We love what we do. We love our guests.  And we always end the day with a smile and full heart.

All donations made to the Community Breakfast are used for the breakfast to buy food, supplies and expenses incurred by the Breakfast. The congregation of Coastside Lutheran Church provides the kitchen and dining space, utilities and administration. Funding for the Breakfast comes from support from our partner Abundant Grace Coastside Worker; grants from organizations such as SVCF, Peace Lutheran Church, and the ELCA World Hunger's Daily Bread Feeding Ministry; fundraisers such as the Coastside Lutheran Church Book Faire and Coastside Gives as well as from individual donors. A donation of $150 pays for 50 meals. Every dollar makes a difference. Every meal matters. Your donation helps keep breakfast on the table for those who need it most.

Please watch our page as we have received several matching grants from some generous local donors. These grants mean that your donations will go farther.  A donation of $25 becomes $50, $100 becomes $200. Let’s ensure we use the generous support of our donors!
