Testimonials

Keith Holden, Half Moon Bay High School Head Football Coach

As the head football coach here at Half Moon Bay High School, I cannot overstate the transformative impact the HMBHS Boosters have on our program. They are the backbone of our operation, consistently stepping up to cover critical costs that go far beyond the basics. From funding our safety equipment and providing our players with top-tier gear to investing in our coaching staff through ongoing professional development, the Boosters help us perform at our best. Most importantly, they handle nearly all of our day-to-day operations, which lets our staff stay focused on what matters most: developing our student-athletes both on and off the field. We simply could not provide the championship-level experience our kids deserve without their unwavering support.

Mike Barragan, Athletic Director, Half Moon Bay High School

As I began my tenure as Athletic Director I was completely overwhelmed by the amount of moving parts. Half Moon Bay High School may be small, but Cougar Athletics has made a huge impact on our community and across the whole Peninsula. As I travel to other sites and speak with fellow coaches and Athletic Directors, I am often told how much respect they have for our student athletes and fan base. The backbone of our entire athletic program is without question the Cougar Boosters. I was able to lean on several members to help guide me as I learned the ropes, and I have made an effort to further strengthen our partnership, knowing how vital it is to our success. Boosters work tirelessly to fill every need from financial to volunteer manpower. They have a fingerprint on every event we host and every sport we offer. They take care of safety equipment, jerseys, and most importantly, help make sure our Athletic Trainer has everything she needs to keep our athletes healthy and thriving. Supporting Cougars Boosters will always directly ensure we can provide the best experience for all our student-athletes. I am extremely grateful for the support Cougar Boosters provide and I thank everyone who has contributed to this amazing and essential organization.

Stephanie Roberts, Assistant Coach at Half Moon Bay High School
My name is Stephanie Roberts, and I was the assistant coach for HMB XC and Track for many years. I could write about how important community, social engagement, teamwork, and exercise are to a young adult's mental health, but this is well documented. There is a more personal angle that I discovered by accident that is also very powerful. It is the relationship between the young adult (athlete) and their coach. What we don't know as a coach is what is happening at home or what the personal struggles are for that athlete (unless they tell you of course). To make this point, I would like to tell you a story.
About 3 years ago, the mother of an athlete stopped me in the grocery store. With many tears she went on to tell me the profound impact that I had in her son's life. She was married to an abusive man and her son would stay at school late so his time at home was minimized. She went on to say that when he came home he would always talk about you and how you made him feel. She added that she felt like she wasn't there for her son when she should have been and wanted to thank me for being there for him. The thing is, I didn't know I was doing this. We don't know the impact we have. It is significant.
Sometimes school, or specifically athletics, are the normal the athletes have been home life is dysfunctional.
