At BGCC, we know the importance of sports to our youth and our community -- developing physical fitness, promoting teamwork, teaching reliance, and creating friendships.

In 2020, CUSD made the difficult decision to cut sports funding at Cunha. BGCC stepped in and took on the responsibility of funding and managing the entire Cunha after-school athletics program.  This is our 6th year operating this robust sports program for more than 450 students on 30 teams in 8 sports for girls and boys.

Sports include:

Basketball

Cross Country

Flag Football

Soccer

Tennis

Track and Field

Volleyball

Wrestling.

We proudly partner with Cunha Athletics Boosters (CAB), a volunteer parent group that supports parent communication and fundraises to provide uniforms and equipment costs.

Some Historical Perspective

Cunha Sports were going to be cancelled in 2020, we asked alums why Cunha Sports Matter?  Here are some of the answers.

"Cunha Sports Matter because they are the best place to build friendships. Middle school can be a tough transition from elementary school, and having a sense of belonging and working together toward one common team goal really helped me with that transition. There is no better feeling than knowing you have friends and teammates that have your back at all times, no matter what." - Christopher Jacobson

"Cunha athletics is important because it gives kids from all walks of life on the Coastside an opportunity to participate in something that facilitates togetherness. Cunha athletics gave me my first real experience in the power of the Coastside community, and that I could contribute to community pride at a young age." - Logan Marshall, Logan represented  Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on their cross country team.

“Cunha sports was where I played on my first team. It was where I created lifelong friendships/brotherhood! It showed me discipline, work ethic and a way to express your feelings. If I didn’t have Cunha sports, I wouldn’t be the person/ athlete I am today.”- EJ Madriaga.  EJ worked for years as beloved BGCC staffer and now owns his own fitness studio.

“Cunha sports were the catalyst of many memories, lessons, and friendships I hold today.

They provided a healthy, affordable outlet for us all to grow collectively and individually, and to fail and learn from our mistakes safely.

If I didn’t have those opportunities, I don’t know if I would have achieved the things I have thus far.”

Corey Cilia.  Corey played competitive basketball for the Vietnams' National team.

"Cunha athletics was very important for my development, I was a shy kid who came from a small elementary school (Kings Mountain). Without having the opportunity to play sports, I would have had a hard time making friends. Additionally, sports were a way for me to be involved in school and stay active." - Kailani Bowers

"At Cunha I tried sports I had never been exposed to and played them through high school. I was part of the first Lady Cougars Girls Basketball team to win CCS. That would never have been possible without the skill building, friendship and love for the game that was developed at Cunha." - Carolyn Inglis

"Cunha athletics are important because they open up doors to kids who are still exploring their talents! They also get people to all make new friends. At Cunha, I learned a lot of the basics to the sports I still do now. I want Cunha athletics to stay so that other students can have the same ability to make friends and find something that they are good at." - Kendall Mansukhani

"Cunha athletics are important because they teach you teamwork and sportsmanship. Also, you get to meet new people and give you a chance to be involved with your school." -Abby Kennedy

"Cunha athletics gives kids something to do after school, keeps them out of trouble, and develops social and leadership skills. Being the new girl coming into 7th grade was tough. However, being a part of such an amazing sports program made me feel welcome." - Raymi Sharp

“Cunha sports provided the foundation I needed to pursue my athletic career and continue to grow as a man and an athlete at the next levels. I built friendships that I will have for life and a true sense of a work ethic that I will never stop using.” - Cole Watts

"I think Cunha athletics are important because even though I attended Cunha only a few years ago, I think back to some of the memories that were created through Cunha athletics as some of the most fun moments of my life." - Mykola Ediger
